Looking after yourself

Children take their cue from the adults around them. They borrow your calm. You can't give that if you're running on empty.

It's good for them to see you cry, and to see you being comforted. It teaches them grief is survivable.

If you are too overwhelmed, ask another relative to be your child's grief buddy for a while. Accept practical help.

Your own grief deserves support too. Talking to a GP, counsellor or bereavement service is part of looking after your child.
