Do this together

Our memory jar

Pour your memories of them into a jar, one colour at a time, until it's full.

About 25 minutes6 short stepsAges 3 to 17

Before you start

For the grown-up
  1. 1Find a quiet spot where you can sit side by side, with the screen between you.
  2. 2Tell your child what you're going to do together, roughly how long it takes, and that either of you can stop at any time.
  3. 3Think of one memory of them you'd like to share first. It helps your child if you go first.
  4. 4Have tissues and a drink nearby. Tears and laughter are both welcome.
Why this helps

Making something with your hands while you talk takes the pressure off. Children often share more side by side than face to face. A keepsake gives memories a place to live, and research on continuing bonds shows that staying connected to the person who died is healthy, not a sign of being stuck.
