Do this together

Our calendar of memories

Mark the days that matter, like their birthday, and choose what you'll do on each one.

About 25 minutes6 short stepsAges 6 to 17

Before you start

For the grown-up
  1. 1Tell your child what you're going to do together, roughly how long it takes, and that either of you can stop at any time.
  2. 2Have the dates to hand: their birthday, the day they died, and any days your family shares.
  3. 3Some days will feel heavy to talk about. You can just mark them and plan later.
  4. 4Have tissues and a drink nearby. Tears and laughter are both welcome.

Why this helps

Birthdays, anniversaries and festivals can bring grief back strongly, sometimes without warning. Knowing they're coming and having a ritual planned helps children feel less caught out, and marking the days together keeps they part of the family's year.
