Do this together

Grow a memory garden

Plant a flower for each thing they loved, and watch your garden bloom.

About 25 minutes6 short stepsAges 3 to 17

Before you start

For the grown-up
  1. 1Tell your child what you're going to do together, roughly how long it takes, and that either of you can stop at any time.
  2. 2Think of something they loved: a food, a place, a song, a person.
  3. 3If you'd like to plant real seeds afterwards, have a pot, some compost and cress or flower seeds ready.
  4. 4Have tissues and a drink nearby. Tears and laughter are both welcome.

Why this helps

Looking after something living gives grief somewhere gentle to go. A garden grows and changes, like the bond with the person who died, which carries on in a new way. Doing it side by side gives easy moments to talk.
